A Second Chance for Mochi

A shaggy tan/blonde terrier mix on a leash stands on a sidewalk in front of a stone wall and glass storefront entrance.

When ARC officers received a report of animal abuse caught on video, they knew every hour mattered.

The dog at the center of that report, a roughly 6-year-old Maltese/Miniature Poodle mix named Mochi, was in serious danger. Officers moved quickly, opening an investigation and taking immediate action to get him to safety.

A Thorough Investigation

Mochi was seized and transported to an emergency veterinarian for a full evaluation. What the exam revealed was heartbreaking: numerous fractures throughout his body, in various stages of healing. For ARC's officers and the veterinary team, the pattern of injuries told its own story: one of prolonged, repeated harm.

That's where ARC's investigative work took over. Officers built a thorough case, working alongside detectives from the Chino Police Department to pursue accountability. Their collaboration led to a felony arrest just days later; a testament to how quickly and effectively ARC officers can act when an animal's safety is on the line.

Because the case was so well documented, Mochi's seizure was never contested. That meant ARC could move forward right away in securing his future, without delay or added trauma for Mochi.

From Survivor to Success Story

Despite everything he'd endured, Mochi never lost his spirit. ARC staff who cared for him got to know a dog who was gentle, playful, and always ready for a game of fetch.

Mochi was ultimately transferred to an out-of-state rescue, where he's now living the life he always deserved; one filled with safety, compassion, and love.

"This case is exactly why our work matters," said Clint Thacker, Executive Director of ARC. "Every jurisdiction we serve can count on ARC to investigate thoroughly, work hand-in-hand with law enforcement, and follow through until an animal is safe. Mochi's case is a hard reminder of what some animals endure, but it's also proof of what's possible when we hold people accountable and keep our community and its animals safe together."

Mochi's story is a powerful example of what ARC officers do every day: responding quickly, investigating thoroughly, and never giving up on an animal until they're safe. It's the kind of prompt reporting, careful documentation, and close partnership with law enforcement that makes real outcomes possible for Mochi, and for every animal ARC serves.

If you witness animal abuse or neglect in ARC's jurisdictions, please report it by calling (909) 321-1080. Every report matters and every call could be the start of another second chance.
